As a real estate agent who is an active tennis player, I get asked by newcomers and others planning to move here about the tennis community. Since arriving here 25 years ago from New England, I can say it has been a constant joy to be outside playing 12 months of the year. Sometimes I miss the squash and platform tennis I played during cold winters, but it's a fleeting thought.
If Florida isn't the center of tennis in this country, it's a close second, and despite a fabulous USTA tennis facility recently built in Orlando, we have what many would call the "Mecca" of US tennis training at IMG Academy in Bradenton 25 minutes from downtown Sarasota. Started by Nick Bolletteri decades ago, IMG is still attracting some of the most talented players in the world, and that tennis enthusiasm permeates much of area.
There is organized tennis and training here for kids and adults playing at public courts, as well as private clubs and neighborhood communities. There are USTA Leagues, Tri-Cities Leagues, and Club Leagues playing in the daytime and at night.
One great example is the Suncoast Men's Tennis League with 165 teams in the age divisions of 50s, 60s, 70s, 75s, and 80s playing out of 35 clubs covering all of Sarasota and Manatee Counties. That's 1,800 men playing each week from October to March when the snowbirds start heading north.
Whatever your level, you can find competitive contests or just social games plus lessons and clinics from experienced pros who've taught a range of talent from rank beginners to college players wanting to play on the pro tours.
